: MAME 0.239 was released in late 2021. If you are using a MAME 0.239 emulator build (or a retro-frontend core like RetroArch’s MAME 2003-Plus/MAME current mapped to that era), you need a MAME 0.239 Reference Set .

Look for mame.ini . If it is missing, open your command prompt in that folder and type mame -cc to create it. Open mame.ini with a text editor. Locate the line reading rompath . Change it to point to your folder. Example: rompath roms (if using the default relative path)

| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution | |--------|---------------|----------| | ROM not found | Wrong version | Get 0.239-specific ROMs | | Missing CHD files | Game requires CHD | Download matching .chd file | | Missing BIOS | Required BIOS not in roms/ | Add neogeo.zip , cps2.zip , etc. | | Game shows garbled graphics | Bad ROM or mismatch | Re-verify with -verifyroms |

Arcade emulation does not work like console emulation. MAME dumps change over time as better chips are preservationists scan cleaner data. The Golden Rule of MAME
