Sheriff Murphy unintentionally creates a "Time-Travel Bermuda Triangle" effect around his town. When Cavendish and Dakota find other stranded time travelers (who have been stuck in the 1870s for years), they are told exactly why they cannot leave: Sheriff Murphy is the cause. His presence warps physics and makes time travel nearly impossible to control within his sphere of influence.
