The plot reaches its climax when Hector kills , who was not only Achilles' closest friend and cousin, but had also donned Achilles' armor to rally the troops. Consumed by a new, vengeful wrath and mourning, Achilles re-enters the battle. He reconciles with Agamemnon and then confronts and kills Hector before the gates of Troy. The poem concludes not with the destruction of the city but with a starkly poignant scene: the aged Trojan king Priam courageously visits Achilles' tent to plead for his son’s corpse. Moved by the old man’s suffering, Achilles finally bends his will, marking the return of his humanity and the end of the poem.
