The film is based on the incredible true story of Dieter Dengler, a German-American pilot who was shot down and captured during a secret U.S. military campaign in Laos in 1965, a precursor to the Vietnam War. This wasn't Herzog's first time telling Dengler's story; he had previously chronicled it in the acclaimed 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly .
