Under the Indian Copyright Act, anyone who knowingly infringes or abets the infringement of copyright can face criminal proceedings. The penalties under are severe: imprisonment for a minimum of six months, which can be extended to three years, along with a fine of not less than ₹50,000, which may extend to ₹2 lakhs. For repeat offenders, Section 63A provides for even stricter punishment, including imprisonment for up to seven years. While enforcement has been challenging, the law is clear. Accessing Tamilyogi to watch a movie is not a victimless crime.
