For over a century after Columbus's arrival, the Bahamas remained largely forgotten by European powers. That changed in 1648 when a group of English religious dissidents, the Eleutheran Adventurers, established the first permanent European settlement on the island of Eleuthera, seeking a place to practice their faith freely. This was followed by a period of notorious lawlessness as pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard, used the islands' secluded coves as a base for their plundering. To bring order, Britain established the Bahamas as a crown colony in 1718, beginning an era that would last for over 250 years. Bahamas
