In 1952 Romania, a young nun at the Cârța Abbey tragically takes her own life. The Vatican, suspecting a dark presence, sends Father Burke (Demián Bichir) to investigate. He is joined by Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), a novitiate on the verge of taking her final vows.
