The story begins in 1821 as the original Zorro, (Anthony Hopkins), is imprisoned by the corrupt Spanish Governor Don Rafael Montero . Montero kills Diego’s wife and raises Diego’s infant daughter, Elena , as his own. Twenty years later, Diego escapes and finds a crude bandit, Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas), whom he trains to become his successor.
