Tragically, the film’s production was overshadowed by a real-life ordeal. William Joyce’s young daughter, Mary Katherine, was diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2010. Joyce stepped down as co-director to return home to Louisiana to be with his daughter, and she passed away during the film’s production. Her final wish was to travel the world. While in Greece, with copies of Joyce’s The Man in the Moon book in hand, he read it to her and she gave him a final, profound piece of insight that continues to echo through the film’s legacy. The film’s themes of belief, memory, and hope are deeply personal for its creator. Rise of the Guardians

The story follows Jack Frost, a lonely spirit of winter who has lived for 300 years without being seen or believed in by children. He is suddenly chosen by the "Man in the Moon" to join the Guardians—Nicholas St. North (Santa), E. Aster Bunnymund (Easter Bunny), Toothiana (Tooth Fairy), and the Sandman—to combat Pitch Black, the Boogeyman.
This is starkly illustrated in the film’s most haunting image: a child’s bedroom at night. When a child believes in the Guardians, the room is warm, golden, filled with the glow of the Sandman’s golden dreams. But when Pitch corrupts that belief, the room floods with black, oily sand, and the child’s eyes turn a vacant, Fearful yellow.
In the world of Rise of the Guardians , the Guardians' powers are directly tied to the number of children who believe in them. When Pitch causes children to lose hope, the Guardians weaken, and Sandy is temporarily destroyed. The film highlights that belief is a powerful force of light and hope, essential for innocence.
