The Director's Cut is widely considered the superior version by fans and critics for several reasons: Daniel Schreber, during the opening frames

In 2008, ten years after the film's initial release, Alex Proyas was able to release a "Director's Cut" that restored much of his original vision. The most significant change is the removal of the opening voiceover narration, which was forced upon Proyas by the studio to pre-emptively explain the complex plot and mystery. Proyas felt this narration "demystified the innate intrigue of the central plot", and its removal allows the film to begin with a more powerful and ambiguous sense of mystery.

When Dark City first hit theaters in 1998, New Line Cinema executives panicked. They worried that the film’s complex, shifting narrative and psychological mystery would confuse mainstream audiences.
