The plot of Law Abiding Citizen is a masterclass in escalation. It begins not with a slow burn, but with a tragedy of unimaginable proportions. Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is a seemingly ordinary Philadelphia engineer, a devoted husband and father living an idyllic life with his wife and young daughter. This peace is shattered when two men, Clarence Darby and Rupert Ames, break into his home in a brutal home invasion. In a scene of horrifying coldness, the intruders bind Clyde and force him to watch as they murder his wife and daughter.

Foxx plays the ambitious prosecutor who believes in the system, even when it’s flawed. He is the grounded foil to Butler’s chaotic genius. While his character can be frustratingly arrogant at times, Foxx brings the necessary star power to stand toe-to-toe with Butler.
