In a parallel hybrid, both the gasoline engine and the electric motor are connected to the transmission. This means either the engine, the motor, or both can turn the wheels at the same time. The Honda Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system is a classic example of this design.

This is one of the most important features of a hybrid. When you brake or coast, the electric motor acts as a generator, capturing the kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat. It converts this energy into electricity and sends it back to the battery for storage.
