Julian Pölsler, an Austrian director who grew up on an isolated mountain farm, spent seven years adapting the novel for the screen. He was determined to stay as faithful as possible to the source material, which is why the film relies so heavily on the protagonist’s voice-over narration. Pölsler deliberately chose not to show the wall, wanting it to feel “as non-physical as possible”. For him, the film pays homage to all women forced to live behind an “invisible wall of ignorance and intolerance”.

What follows is not an escape narrative but an absorbing chronicle of adaptation. Left behind with a loyal dog she names Lynx, a cow, and a stray cat, the woman must learn to survive entirely on her own, harvesting wood, hunting for food, and caring for the animals that become her only companions. She begins a diary, recording her thoughts, fears, and the brutal hardships of her new life, though she doubts anyone will ever read it. The film evolves into a poignant and often visceral exploration of a single human soul reinventing her existence within the stark, unforgiving, yet spectacular beauty of nature.
